To find the necessary tax forms and instructions, refer to Correct an income tax return. If a letter is about a changed or corrected tax return, the taxpayer should review the information and compare it with the original return. If the taxpayer agrees, they should make notes about the corrections on their personal copy of the tax return and keep it for their records. Typically, a taxpayer will only need to take action or contact the IRS if they don’t agree with the information, if the IRS requested additional information, or if they have a balance due.

The IRS matches nearly every 1099 form with the payee’s tax return. A 1099-DIV is typically sent to a taxpayer if dividend income was earned throughout the tax year. Dividends are usually in the form of cash payments paid to investors by corporations as a reward for owning their stock or equity shares. Businesses must issue 1099s to any payee (other than a corporation) who receives at least $600 in non-employment income during the year. For example, a 1099 is typically issued by a financial services provider if a customer earned $10 or more in interest income.
